Allied Health Courses After 12th: The Complete Career Guide for 2027
Home / MNR University / Allied Health Courses After 12th: The Complete Career Guide for 2027
The results are out. The marksheet says BiPC, and the NEET score has not landed where the family had hoped. For many students in Telangana, this moment feels like a closed door. It is not.
A hospital does not run on doctors alone. Behind every blood report, CT scan, heart surgery and eye test stands a trained technologist. These people are allied health professionals, and India is short of about 6.2 million of them, according to Sattva Consulting.
Allied health courses after 12th are four- to five-year degrees in fields such as medical laboratory science, radiology and imaging, anaesthesia and operation theatre technology, cardiovascular technology, optometry and physiotherapy. Most of them do not ask for NEET. Students from BiPC, and for several courses MPC, can apply.
So, which are the best allied health colleges in Hyderabad? Parents usually check three things: how many courses a college runs, whether students get to a real hospital, and what the fees come to. MNR University in Sangareddy, Greater Hyderabad, offers 14 undergraduate allied health programmes, charges ₹1.5 lakh a year for most of them, and gives merit scholarships of up to 40%. The sections below cover the courses, costs, salaries and a side-by-side view of other colleges in the city.
| Allied health courses after 12th include Medical Laboratory Science, Radiology and Imaging Technology, Anaesthesia and OT Technology, Cardiovascular Technology, Optometry and Physiotherapy (BPT). They run for four to five years, need 10+2 (usually BiPC), mostly do not need NEET, and lead to starting pay of about ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh a year. |
What Are Allied Health Courses, and Who Can Study Them?
Allied health courses train students to support doctors in diagnosis, treatment and recovery. The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021 gives the legal meaning: an associate, technician or technologist trained to carry out the technical work behind diagnosis and treatment. A qualification under the Act must carry at least 2,000 hours of study spread over two to four years.
The Act recognises 56 professions under 10 categories. The old word “paramedical” is being retired from official use in favour of “allied and healthcare”. In April 2025, the Union health ministry released new syllabi for 10 of these professions, compulsory from 2026. For a student joining in 2027, the degree will follow one national standard rather than a college-made one.
Which Professions Fall Under the NCAHP Act?
Table 1: NCAHP categories and the matching programmes at MNR University
| NCAHP Category | Example Roles | Matching MNR Programme |
| Medical Laboratory and Life Sciences | Lab technologist, microbiologist | B.MLS, M.MLS, M.Sc. Medical Microbiology |

Is NEET Compulsory for Allied Health Courses?
No, not for most of them. At MNR University, admission to undergraduate allied health programmes runs on 10+2 merit or a valid entrance score from a state, national or international test. For the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, a student needs 10+2 with BiPC or MPC, or a two- or three-year diploma in a related technology. The minimum age is 17 years as on 31 December of the admission year.
In the Telangana government quota, KNRUHS fills BPT, B.Sc. MLT and B.Sc. Allied Health Sciences seats through its own web counselling for BiPC students.
Why Are So Many Students Looking at Allied Health Courses in Hyderabad?
Many parents and students still believe that only MBBS leads to a secure medical career. The figures say otherwise.
There is a general notion that South India, and Hyderabad in particular, sits ahead of the rest in healthcare, with large hospital chains, diagnostic networks and a busy pharma sector. Fathoming the consequence of this fact, private universities have expanded their laboratories and clinical tie-ups to draw students from other regions. Yet the supply of trained technologists has not kept pace with the beds being added.
Table 2: India’s allied health workforce gap in numbers
| What the Data Shows | Figure | Source |
| Shortage of allied health professionals in India | About 6.2 million | Sattva Consulting (2022) |
| Share of demand that current training capacity can meet | Only 4% | Sattva Consulting (2022) |
| Allied and healthcare workers already working in India | Over 1.3 million | Business Standard (2025) |
| Unmet demand for allied health services | 30% to 40% | NATHEALTH-BCG, via Business Standard (2023) |
| Health workers per 10,000 people | 20.6 in India against the WHO norm of 44.5 | Current Medical Issues (2025) |
| Union Budget 2026-27 support | ₹1,000 crore to add 1 lakh professionals in five years | Medical Buyer (2026) |
| Professions recognised by law | 56 across 10 categories | NCAHP Act, 2021 |
One could argue that the Budget line matters most of all. When the Union Budget 2026-27 set aside ₹1,000 crore to add one lakh allied health professionals over five years, it marked this workforce as a national priority. For a student finishing Class 12 in 2027, that is a clear signal about where the jobs will be.

Where Can You Study Medical Laboratory Science in Hyderabad?
Among medical laboratory science colleges in Hyderabad, the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) at MNR University covers pathology, microbiology, biochemistry and haematology. Students train in hospital laboratories, learn quality-control steps and practise safe handling of biohazard samples. The course runs for four years, and the M.MLS and a Ph.D. follow on the same campus.
What Should You Check in Colleges for Radiology & Technology in Hyderabad?
Imaging is one of the busiest departments in any Indian hospital. The NATHEALTH-BCG study found that India carried out about 36 imaging tests per 1,000 people in 2022, while Australia managed 144. That gap is the room for growth. When comparing colleges for radiology & technology in Hyderabad, students should ask one plain question: how many hours will they spend on real X-ray, CT and MRI machines? The Bachelor in Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology (B.MRIT) at MNR runs for four years, with an M.MRIT after it.
Is There a B.Sc. in Cardiovascular Technology in Hyderabad?
Yes. MNR University runs a four-year B.Sc. in Cardiovascular Technology in Hyderabad, and a separate B.Sc. in Cardiac & Perfusion Technology. Cardiovascular technologists handle ECG, echo and cath lab work. Perfusionists run the heart-lung machine during open-heart surgery. The NCAHP Act lists both roles, so each degree carries statutory backing.
How Do Optometry Colleges in Hyderabad Differ?
Not everyone is aware that optometry is a full professional degree, not a short certificate. Among optometry colleges in Hyderabad, MNR stands apart for its academic collaboration with the Sankara Eye Foundation, which brings real-time patient interaction, hospital internships and training in advanced ophthalmic procedures. The Bachelor in Optometry (B.Optom.) is listed at five years, and an M.Optom. in vision science follows.
Which Other Allied Health Courses Are Worth a Look?
- Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT), with MPT options in Orthopaedics, Neurology and Cardiopulmonary care

What Makes MNR Stand Out Among the Best Allied Health Colleges in Hyderabad?
One question that often comes up is why so many families shortlist MNR. The answer lies in a mix of legacy and practical features.
- A 50-year legacy: MNR Educational Trust began on 15 August 1974 and now runs 78 institutions with over 49,000 students.
- Telangana’s first DASCA-USA accredited university.
- Gold rating in sustainability excellence for its green campus.
- Academic links with six U.S. universities, among them Emporia State, Wayland Baptist, Faulkner, Campbellsville, St. Francis and the University of the Cumberlands, with study tours, semester exchanges worth 15 to 20 credits, and 2+2 or 3+1+1 degree routes.
- A named clinical partner for eye care, the Sankara Eye Foundation.
- Three separate laboratories that mirror the hardware and software graduates will use in their first jobs.
- Scholarships, internships and a dedicated placement cell.
What Will It Cost, and Are Scholarships Available?
For the most part, fees decide the final choice. At MNR, the four-year allied health programmes, physiotherapy apart, charge tuition of ₹75,000 per semester. With university, examination, IT and library charges added, a first-year semester comes to ₹84,000. A one-time application fee of ₹1,500 and an admission confirmation fee of ₹15,000 apply. Hostel charges start at ₹40,000 for six months in a dormitory, with a 5% annual rise.
Scholarships bring the tuition down a good deal, which is one reason MNR sits among the best allied health colleges in Hyderabad on value for money.
