Optometrists test sight, prescribe spectacles and contact lenses, and screen for eye disease. The work is changing fast: AI now reads retinal images, teleoptometry reaches villages, and myopia clinics are opening in every metro. India has about 45,000 optometry and primary eye care workers against a need of roughly 130,000, so demand stays high. Specialisations include contact lens practice, paediatric optometry, low vision rehabilitation and myopia control. Among optometry colleges in Hyderabad, MNR University runs a B.Optom with eye hospital training and a 40 per cent merit scholarship for allied health students.

<div The honest answer is that software has already started reading retinal photographs, yet the person behind the chair matters more than before.

Eye-specialists in India are stretched thin. Around 550 to 600 million Indians need some form of corrective eyewear, going by industry estimates, while the country counts fewer than 20,000 optometrists in its secondary and tertiary eye hospitals. Every new scanner and screening app still needs a trained pair of eyes to read the result and explain it to a worried patient.

That gap is why a bachelor in optometry has quietly become one of the steadier choices in allied health.
